Utah Employers, Employment and Wages by Size, 2013

The Utah Department of Workforce Services compiles quarterly employment and wage data for non-agricultural employers in Utah. Data is maintained at the establishment level (e.g., store, plant, or other type of permanent worksite facility). Since these establishments are assigned an industry and county code, their employment and wage data can be aggregated into common industry and county groupings for analysis purposes.

Employment and wage data for Utah’s non-agricultural employers are categorized in this publication by employment size for the month of March in each of the designated years. Grouping data by this criterion provides a useful tool to analyze the characteristics of Utah employers. For example, general trends of the size of Utah employers and employment concentrations by employer size class can be observed. Wage levels for large, medium, and small firms can also be evaluated.

In this publication, data is presented for both establishments and firms. The term "establishment" is generally defined as a specific physical worksite for an employer. For most employers, this is the actual street location at which business is conducted. For others, with no permanent worksite (such as salespeople, factory representatives, or distributors) it is the location from which they conduct their business (sometimes even residences).

Dickey’s Barbecue opening in Vernal

A new Dickey’s Barbecue Pit restaurant is opening today in Vernal.

The outlet is the 11th operated by Dickey’s franchise owner John Thomson and is located at 2085 W. Highway 40.

According to their website, Dickey's Barbecue Pit prides itself on authenticity, innovation and barbecue sauce, one store at a time. With roots in Dallas, Travis Dickey set out to perfect Texas-style barbecue.

Dickey's believes that the success of a franchise depends on quality food, recruiting the right owner-operators and providing an in-depth support system. The initial stage of franchise support begins at Barbecue U, an intense, three-week training session where owner-operators learn how to run the restaurant from open to close.

The loyal patrons are what keep Dickey's thriving in every community. Barbecue is a regional cuisine in mostly southern states, but Dickey's Barbecue Pit is changing that one restaurant at a time. As it continues to expand from coast to coast, customers are wooed by the home-style flavor and family friendly atmosphere. Salt Lake Tribune

Crescent Point Snares Ute Energy in $861M Transaction

Canada's Crescent Point Energy Corp. said Thursday it would buy Ute Energy Upstream Holdings LLC in a $861 million cash and debt deal that would extend the energy producer south into the U.S. Rocky Mountain region.

Denver-based Ute is active in Utah's Uintah Basin and is currently producing about 7,800 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Terms of the deal call for Crescent Point, of Calgary, to pay $784 million in cash and assume about $77 million in debt for privately held Ute, with the deal expected to close by the end of the month.

Crescent Point, which is engaged in developing oil and gas properties primarily in Saskatchewan and Alberta, in a statement, said it believes it can apply some of the vertical and horizontal infill drilling techniques it has used successfully in Canada to the Ute properties. The company also sees value in Ute's large undeveloped land base, which is also located in the Uintah Basin.

"This resource play is a new core area for Crescent Point and is consistent with our strategy of acquiring high-quality, large oil-in-place pools with long-term upside potential," Crescent Point CEO Scott Saxberg said in a statement. "We see great opportunities in the Uintah Basin."

The seller is the Ute Tribe Business Committee, a representative of the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation which formed Ute Energy in 2005. Irene C. Cuch, chairwoman of the Ute Tribe Business Committee, in a statement said her group is "pleased to have another quality operator of Crescent Point's capabilities and financial strength operating on our lands and look forward to a long and successful relationship." Business degrees a possibility close to home

Those coming to hear about the opportunities available at the University of Utah Uintah Basin campus ranged from a high school senior with a desire to start a business to an oil field worker who wants to finish his education to pursue a different path.

The evening was an attempt to recruit business students, said Bob Peterson, director of student services for the university. He explained students can attend locally to pursue one of four business degrees offered in the Basin: accounting, economics, management information systems and business administration. Also offered is a master's degree in human resources management, and several minors, including hospitality and tourism.

The Jon M. Huntsman School of Business was established at Utah State University after a $25 million grant to the school in 2007 from Huntsman, a respected Utah business leader and philanthropist. While part of that grant includes a new building for business education at the university's man campus, students can receive the same degree they would get in Logan, explained Dr. David Woolstenhulme of USU. “It's an awesome opportunity,” he said.

Those in attendance had an opportunity to hear about the offerings from the school as well as learn about scholarship possibilities. Break-out sessions where held for several of the offerings, including accounting, economics and business administration. Aggie ice cream sweetened the deal for event participants. Vernal Express
